The Heart is a vital part of the Human Circulatory System. The Human Circulatory System is responsible for the transportation of blood in the human body. There are, broadly two categories of blood circulation. The Human Circulatory System is of two types, systemic blood circulation and pulmonary blood circulation. The heart is vital for both of types of circulation.
The heart can be roughly defined as a thick muscular organ that acts as a pump for transporting blood in the human body. The heart is covered by a thin membrane known as the peri cardium. The word 'cardiac' in medical terminology means “of or related to, the heart.”

By rhythmic contractions, and expansions, the heart pumps blood through out the body. The different compartments called the ventricles and auricles, with the help of the tiny muscular valves called the semi lunar valves, carry on this function of pumping blood through out the human body.
Systemic Circulation is that aspect of Human Circulatory System that is responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the other parts of the body. This is oxygenated blood, or oxygen rich, pure blood. The deoxygenated or impure blood is carried back to the heart for purification. As far as systemic blood circulation is concerned, the arteries carry pure blood away from the heart. The veins carry impure blood back to the heart for purification.
In the pulmonary circulation system, the process is slightly different. Here, too the heart acts as the pump. The heart pumps impure or de- oxygenated blood to the lungs. Pulmonary means of or pertaining to the lungs. Once, impure blood or deoxygenated blood reaches the lungs from the heart, there is a massive purification process. The alveoli are the centers of exchange of gases, in the lungs. It is at the alveoli that the blood gives out the impure carbon dioxide, and takes in fresh oxygen. The RBCs or the red blood cells are the oxygen carriers in the human body. They help in the transportation of oxygen in human beings. This oxygen rich blood is carried back to the heart from the lungs.
The heart receives this pure, oxygen rich blood and then, from the left ventricle the pure blood is sent to the various other organs in the body. In pulmonary blood circulation, the pulmonary artery carries the impure blood, from the heart to the lungs, while it is the pulmonary vein carries pure blood from the lungs to the heart. Note that the lungs is the only part of the body that receives impure blood from the heart. The heart receives pure blood from only one part of the body, that is the lungs.
Inside the heart, there are four compartments. Coronary circulation points to the circulation of blood within the heart muscles. The heart is made up of thick muscular tissue called myocardium. This thick muscular tissue delivers blood deep inside the muscles of the heart. On an average, the heart beats about seventy two times in an adult. The blood vessels that transport pure or oxygen rich blood to the heart tissue are termed as coronary arteries. The cardiac veins carry out the vital function of removing impure blood from the heart tissues.
