The Intestine is a very important organ in the alimentary canal- the digestive tract found in human beings. The Human Digestive System helps in nourishing the human body. It starts with the mouth and ends at the rectum. The intestine is the segment of the alimentary canal which extends from the stomach to the anus. It consists of two segments- the small intestine and the large intestine as well. The small intestine is further divided into the duodenum, jejunum and ileum while the large intestine is further subdivided into the cecum and colon. The large intestine does the work of absorbing water from the digested material and the reabsorption of sodium.

It also carries out the important function of carrying out a check to see that there are no nutrients which have escaped the process of primary digestion which takes place in the ileum. In spite of the intestine carrying out such an important function in the body it is prone to diseases which interfere with its normal functioning. There are Diseases which take place in the Intestines. Some of the Intestine Diseases which can set into the body are :
Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the intestines. It is the most common of the Intestine Diseases. It is a disorder which sets into the body when a person suffers bout of food poisoning.
One of the other common Intestinal Diseases which can engulf the body is Ileus. It is a malady resulting from the blockage of the intestines.
Yet another commonly found of the Intestine Diseases is Illeitis. It refers to the inflammation of the intestines.
Colitis is yet another one of the common out of the Intestine Diseases which hit the body. This disorder sets into the body when an inflammation takes place within the large intestine.
One of the commonly found intestinal disorders these days is Appendicitis. Appendicitis operations have become very frequent and common. The disorder comprises the inflammation of the vermiform appendix located in the cecum area of the digestive system. This is a potentially fatal disease. If it left untreated it can also result in further complications.
Coeliac disease and ulcerative colitis are other intestinal disorders which engulf the intestines calling for attention. Like all other the other of the Intestine Diseases it too requires the attention of a specialist. Treatment has to be provided likewise.
Coeliac disease occurs through intestinal malfunctioning . The intestines loses it capacity to bring about the proper absorption of liquids and other substances. It effects about 1% of the population of a northern European descent. The intestines cannot take the presence of gluten proteins found in food substances like wheat, barley and rye. This leads to the atrophy of these substances in the small intestine. Patients are put on a special diet which prevents the harmful accumulation of gluten based substances in the small intestine.
Ulcerative colitis along with Crohn's disease are an outcome of an inflammation which sets into the intestines. They are examples of inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn's can gradually spread all over the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative colitis takes place only in the large intestine. Crohn's disease is also considered to be an autoimmune disease. However, it has not been ascertained whether it actually be counted amongst this category of diseases.
Enteroviruses is also considered to be an intestinal disorder. However, it takes place more in the transmission route through the intestine. Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder of the intestine. Functional constipation and chronic functional abdominal pain are other disorders related to the intestine. They can be termed more as aberrations of a transient nature rather than intestinal disease needing cause and concern.
A lot of Medical Studies have taken place primarily to combat the fatal influences of these diseases and they have proved very useful for mankind.
