Lungs Diseases

Lungs Diseases are any disease or disorder that retards or impairs the function of the Lungs. Lungs Diseases are the third leading cause of death in the US, resulting in 1 death out of 7 every year. Diseases of the Lungs or other lung infections are the number one causes of infant mortality. It is thus recorded that 35 million Americans are living with Lungs Diseases.

Lungs Diseases can be categorized into two divisions:

  • Obstructive Lungs Diseases: The narrowing or blockage of airways resulting in the decreased flow of exhaled air is known as obstructive Lungs Diseases. Chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Emphysema, Asthma and Bronchiectasis are some examples of Obstructive Lungs Diseases.
  • Restrictive Lungs Diseases: Restrictive Lungs Diseases are responsible for the loss of lung tissue, decrease lung expansion, decrease ability to transfer oxygen or carbon dioxide with the blood. Pulmonary Fibrosis (including sarcoidosis), lung cancer, and pneumonia are examples of Restrictive Lungs Diseases.
Out of the numerous causes of Lungs Diseases, some of the noted causes are
  • Smoking: Smoking is the major reason for Lungs diseases Radon:Radon is a colorless, odorless gas. It is labeled as carcinogenic. It is the second leading cause of Lung cancer. Each Year radon kills nearly 1000 Americans.
  • Asbestos: Asbestos are those group of naturally occurring minerals having strong, flexible fibers that are easy to manipulate. Asbestos fibers when inhaled and enter the respiratory tract cause diseases like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.
  • Indoor air pollution: The amount of air that we inhale contains certain or minute amounts of pollutants in the form of gases, dusts, molds and chemicals. Most of these are harmless but can become harmful and fatal if trapped in a confined space such as a house or a poor ventilated room. These pollutants might cause breathing problems resulting in diseases like Asthma or bronchitis. The causes of Indoor pollution are tobacco/cigar/pipe smoking, the release of carbon monoxide etc.
  • Outdoor air pollution: Outdoor air pollution is caused due to ozone depletion. This can lead to premature aging of Lungs, decreases lung function, worsening symptoms of asthma, emphysema, and other lung diseases. This also may lead to inflammation and damage of the inner lining of the Lungs.
The various symptoms of Lungs Diseases are as follows:
  • Cough: Coughing occurs due to our defense mechanisms being alerted of the entry of foreign particles inside the airways of mucus. Cough can be useful or not depending upon its intensity. An useful cough helps in clearing up of the mucus. A persistent or worsening cough can result in fever. It might cause blood and sputum which needs immediate medical attention.
  • Dyspnea: It is also known as shortness of breath. This problem arises as a result of problematic respiratory systems, heart diseases.
  • Wheezing: While inhaling or exhaling a kind of high pitched sound is derived which is known ads wheezing. It is caused when here is obstruction or inflammation of airways. Wheezing also signals at worsening of lung conditions.
  • Hemoptysis: It is in the form of blood clot, pinkish froth mucus with a bloody streak or pure blood. It occurs as a result of continuous coughing or indicates to a serious Lungs Diseases.
